A bishop's mantle is a chain mail collar covering the neck, the shoulders and the upper part of the chest and back. It was particularly favoured by the German Landknechte (mercenary soldiers) in the 15th and 16th centuries and is woven similarly to a mail coif. The shape of this piece of chain armour explains its name, as it greatly resembled the very wide-cut collar of a bishop's mantle.
The bishop's mantles made by Ulfberth are modeled on historical examples. They feature a jagged edge. A riveted leather liner protects the area around the neck and the neckline is adjustable by means of straps and genuine late medieval brass buckles.
The FRR chain maille type: This particular mesh is a European chainmail type exclusively composed of flat rings. All rings are closed by means of round rivets with round heads. The weave is 4 in 1. This type is called FRR (= Flat ring Round Rivet heads).

Die Ringe sind sauber verarbeitet und sehen wunderschön aus. Der Lederstreifen am Hals sorgt für einen bequemen, festen Sitz, und die Schnallen sind attraktiv. Insgesamt ist die Form sehr ansprechend, und der Kragen ist groß genug, um nicht aufgerüsteten Schultern zu klein zu wirken. Allerdings: 1. Die Öffnung ist recht klein. Für meinen zugegeben großen Kopf musste ich die Öffnung um vier Ringreihen erweitern, was mühselig war, da die Ringe, wie erwähnt, sehr gut halten. 2. Der Kragen wurde als 'leicht geölt' beschrieben, aber meiner war praktisch mit Öl durchtränkt und roch ranzig. Auch nach mehreren Wäschen in Seifenlauge war der Geruch nur auf ein erträgliches Maß reduziert, und die Lederteile riechen immer noch stark.
