Late middle ages

The Late Middle Ages describes the third and last period of the Middle Ages from about 1250 to 1500, followed by the early modern period. This period was characterized by initial prosperity and growth, but also by later famines due to crop failures and epidemics, as well as the Black Death, which wiped out about a third of the population of Europe.

With the beginning of the 16th century the Middle Ages ended. Many important events triggered it, such as the discovery of the New World, the beginning of the Reformation, the emergence of humanism, and the conquest of Byzantium/Constantinople by the Turks.

In the late Middle Ages, more advanced versions of medieval helmets were used. The pot helmet evolved into the Hundsgugel , which had a flip-up visor and a larger field of vision than its predecessor. In Italy, the barbuta emerged, strongly reminiscent of the ancient Corinthian helmets. The Hundsgugel was eventually supplanted by the Armet and the Schaller.
