Shields

The shield is a so-called protective weapon, which serves to defend against melee attacks with weapons as well as projectiles such as arrows. Shields are among the oldest protective objects in the world and were already used in prehistoric times. In the beginning they were often made of wickerwork, later of sturdy wood which was covered with leather. In the course of time, these wooden shields were covered with metal, until they finally consisted entirely of metal.

Shields were carried by a handle behind the shield boss or by loops attached along the shield. Their shape also changed over the years. In ancient times, the Roman legions, among others, used the so-called scutum, a large tower shield with excellent protective properties. The large Greek hoplite shields also date from this period.

Round shields were used in antiquity, the Middle Ages as well as in modern times. As their name suggests, they had a shape without corners, which made the shield more stable, but also reduced its protective range. This type of shield is often associated with Vikings and sailors. The Normans used so-called dragon shields, which evolved from the round shield. These Norman shields are elongated, downward tapering shields with a rounded top edge, which were relatively high. Many of these shields were decorated with paintings.

Crest shields were mostly so-called triangular shields, which were covered with cloth, for example, to paint it with a coat of arms. These triangular shields were smaller than the dragon shields and had a flat top edge to reduce the weight. Bucklers derive their name from the shield boss, which is located in the center of many shields.
