Plain Kettle Hat, Medieval Helmet
The kettle hat or war hat owes its name to its resemblance to a cooking pot (originally called a kettle). This rather plain helmet in the shape of a brimmed hat came into fashion in the 13th century and enjoyed great popularity all over Europe until into the 15th century.
Although kettle hats existed in many variations, they all shared the same characteristic feature: a wide brim that offered protection against downward sword blows and projectiles shot or dropped from above, without impairing the wearer’s sight, hearing or breathing.
This reconstruction of a medieval kettle hat is made of 1.6 mm steel. The bowl features a slight ridge or crest running along its apex. The edge of the approx. 7 cm wide is rolled all around.
The interior is blackened for better corrosion resistance and fitted with a riveted suspension liner made of black leather. The adjustable black* leather chin strap closes with an antiqued brass buckle (*the above pictures differ from the actual colour).
Suitable for re-enactment, LARP, stage or TV/film, this fully wearable helmet is most fitting for settings of the late Middle Ages and ideal to complete the armour of a European warrior. Of course, it will also make a great addition to any helmet collector’s treasure chamber.
This medieval helm is available in two sizes (S and M).
Details:
- Material: 1.6 mm steel
- Incl. leather inlay and leather chin strap with brass buckle
- Height: approx. 18 cm

Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.
The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain helmets on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
