In the 15th century, the combat helmet known as the sallet superseded the bascinet and, by the mid-century, had become one of the most worn helmets throughout Europe. This helmet type could be found in many different shapes and variations - from plain to elaborately crafted, open-faced or visored, with a more or less pronounced tailpiece, etc. - and was especially popular in Italy (celata), Germany (Schaller), France (salade) and England. At the dawn of the Renaissance, this medieval helmet eventually evolved into the 16th c. burgonet.
This authentic, fully battle-ready reconstruction of a German sallet crafted around 1480 A.D. is made of 2 mm steel and features a projecting neck guard and a slight ridge or crest running along its apex. The rolled edge is adorned with grooves, and the rectangular, approx. 1 to 1.5 cm wide, 14 cm long eye-slit with an extended lower lip ensures sufficient vision, while also allowing for proper ventilation.
The interior is blackened for better corrosion resistance, and fitted with an adjustable, padded, black cloth liner attached with rivets. The sturdy chin strap made of brown, 2 mm thick leather closes with an antiqued brass buckle.
This late medieval helm is available in two sizes (M and L).

Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.
The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain helmets on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.

Für andere gebe ich zu bedenken, dass der Kinnriemen zumindest bei meinem Exemplar sehr weit vorne angebracht ist, sodass er mir unter dem Kinn zugeschnallt nichts bringt. Ich trage ihn stattdessen nach hinten gebunden, sodass er meinen Hinterkopf hält.
Wenn ich drauf angewiesen wäre, würde mich außerdem die Verarbeitung des Innenpolsters stören, der kleber löst sich bereits jetzt und dabei habe ich den Helm erst vielleicht zehn, elf Tage im Einsatz.
