This bonnet is made of a light cotton fabric. A concealed elastic band ensures a good fit and creates a beautiful ruffle at the hem. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the bonnet was the headgear of married women, while unmarried ones were allowed to leave their heads uncovered. The expression "get under the bonnet" is derived from this custom. Even today, bonnets are an integral part of European traditional costumes. In addition, the bonnet also had a practical use - to protect the hair from dirt, e.g. in the household or at work.
