Norman Spangenhelm with Nasal, Medieval Helmet, 2 mm Steel
– Battle-Ready –
This fully wearable, battle-ready reconstruction of a Norman nasal helmet as worn in the 10th / 11th c. is crafted from approx. 2 mm thick steel. It consists of a conical helmet bowl, overlapping strips or bands (in German so-called Spangen) running around the lower edge, from front to back and from ear to ear, as well as a nose guard (or nasal). The bands are riveted onto the bowl, and the nose piece is riveted onto the brow-band.
The interior of this battle-ready helmet is blackened for better corrosion resistance, and fitted with a stitched in suspension liner made of leather. The sturdy, adjustable chin strap made of dark brown* leather closes with an antiqued brass buckle (*the above pictures differ from the actual colour).
This medieval Spangenhelm is most fitting for settings of the Early and High Middle Ages, and ideal to complete the armour of a Norman warrior. However, owing to its rather simple appearance, our Norman helmet is also equally suitable as a Viking helmet or a crusader helmet from the early High Middle Ages.
Suitable for combat re-enactment, LARP, stage or TV/film, it is also a great, decorative addition to any helmet collector’s treasure chamber.
Details:
- Suited for combat re-enactment
- Material: 2 mm steel (up to 3 mm at Spangen level), leather inlay, leather chin strap with antiqued brass buckle
- Suitable for head circumference up to approx. 64 cm
- Long distance (back to front): approx. 21.5 cm
- Short distance (ear to ear): approx. 19 cm
- Height: approx. 20 cm
- Nose guard: approx. 14 cm long (10 cm from the bowl's edge) / 4 cm wide
- Weight: approx. 2700 g
Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.
The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain helmets (and armour in general) on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.

Nasalhelm
