This decorative sword was inspired by the Sandai Kitetsu, which pirate hunter Lorenor Zoro (jap. Roronoa Zoro) wields in the anime One-Piece. The Sandai Kitetsu belongs to the grade swords and thus to the 4th rank of the sword classification within the anime and manga.
It has an approx. 67.5 cm long, slightly sharpened blade made of high carbon steel, its tsuka is wrapped with a red grip band. The unconventional decorative elements on the tsuka and saya, like the cross-shaped tsuba, are made of gold-anodised aluminium, The richly decorated red-coated saya is made of wood and has a red grip band wrapped around its middle.
History behind the sword
It was made by Kozuki Sukiyaki, one of the best swordsmiths in Wano, as an imitation of the Nidai Kitetsu (one of the 21 great grade swords). The term Sandai indicates that the Sandai Kitetsu is the third sword in a series of swords with the name Kitetsu.
This katana from the isolated island state of Wa no Kuni somehow found its way into the shop of the arms dealer Ipponmatsu in Loguetown. Zorro went to this shop to replace his two swords, after they were shattered in the fight with Hawk Eyes Mihawk. He discovered the Sandai Kitetsu in a barrel full of rejects and immediately recognised the high quality of the sword. However, when the shop owner realised that his customer had chosen this particular blade, he prohibited him from buying it and then told him about the curse on this katana, which would bring its owner a horrible death. Zoro was intrigued by this concept so he decided to test his luck against the curse; he threw the sword whirling in the air and resolutely stretched out his arm, ready to lose it if fate turned against him. But the blade missed his arm by a hair's breadth, whirled around it and then sank three-quarters into the wooden floor of the weapon shop. Impressed by this nerve-wracking action, Ipponmatsu hurried to the attic of his shop to fetch his family heirloom, the Yubashiri, which he then gifted to the swordsman together with the Kitetsu.
Since then, Kiketsu has served the three-sword style swordsman well, although he describes it as his problem child that needs more attention than his other swords. But it proved its worth in his numerous fights against increasingly stronger opponents.
Please note that this katana was designed as a collector's item or decorative object.
