Medieval Fire Steel

Our hand-forged fire striker is made of high carbon steel and modeled after medieval originals.

Striking the fire steel against the sharp edge of a flint generates sparks which ignite the dry tinder and make it smoulder. So-called tinder fungi were usually used as tinder: These mushroom-like bracket fungi were harvested from the tree trunks and soaked in a nitrous solution, horse urin, or rubbed with black powder to allow them to kindle.
