It is assumed that hand-grinding quern-stones were already known in Europe and the Middle East in pre-Roman times. Our replica is based on Roman originals, but can of course be used for medieval re-enactment as well.
The quern has two disc-shaped carved stones which are connected with a steel rod in the center. After the grain has been placed between the two millstones, the upper stone can be rotated using the wooden handle and the mill now grinds the grain into flour.
Our quern is a historical prop! As the stones have a certain grit, the flour should not used for food preparation. This item is nevertheless a great piece to demonstrate the ancient and medieval grinding techniques.
Details:
- Material: natural sandstone (colour may slightly vary from piece to piece)
- Diameter: approx. 30 cm (12")
- Thickness of the stones: approx. 5 cm (2")
- Weight: approx. 15 kg (33 lb)
