English or French Single-Edged Arming Sword

This is a replica of a single-edged sword from the mid-15th century. The original was excavated in France (it was probably found at the site of the 1453 battle of Castillon-la-Bataille). The one-handed sword belongs to a group of over eighty swords discovered at the same site and has been part of the Royal Armouries collection since 1984, object number IX.2638.

This medieval knightly sword has a single-edged, thin and remarkably wide blade with a wedge-shaped cross-section and a false edge at the back of the blade.
The quillons end in curled tips, which were intended to hold back the opponent's blade. The asymmetrical grip is at the back of the blade, and the squat scent-stopper pommel makes the short grip comfortable to hold. This sword feels pleasantly manoeuvrable and is surprisingly light compared to its bulky appearance.

This replica is crafted with a hand-forged blade by a skilled blacksmith using modern 1080 high-carbon steel that is fully tempered and distally tapered for proper weight distribution.

The scabbard is made with a wooden core and covered with leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass chape, which is decorated with elaborate recesses and an acorn point. At the throat, the leather extends upward and covers part of the guard.

Includes a certificate of authenticity and a polishing cloth.
