Viking Long Seax, Peterson Type G, with Leather Scabbard

Owing to its overall length of 82 cm, this Viking Age sax knife or scramasax is rather to be classified as a sword. It features a single-edged, blunt EN45 spring steel blade with a thick spine and a pointed tip. The blade’s full tang is sturdily peened to the pommel. A particularly broad fuller runs the top two-thirds of the blade along the spine and ends just before the blade tip. The wooden grip has a tight binding of thin, brown leather cord.

But what makes this early medieval one-handed sword stand from the crowd is the unconventional shape of its steel guard and pommel. The Petersen type G Viking swords are a quite small group of rare, little widespread, mostly single-edged swords. They are characterized by a lower guard and an upper guard / pommel usually equipped with tapered ends that are twisted into symmetrical spirals and point away from the grip. As finds have been scarce so far, it has been quite difficult to provide reliable evidence as to the dating and distribution of this sword type. However, based on the few surviving examples (or fragments thereof), experts tend to believe that type G swords have their origins in 9th/10th c. Norway.

The long Viking seax comes with a sturdy, high-quality sheath that is made of brown leather and features a handsome, durable braided seam.

This Viking sword is designed as a collector’s decoration/display piece and, besides its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as a prop (e.g. to complete your costume) and will make your transformation into a proud Norse warrior just perfect!
