At international level, legal provisions pertaining to the purchase, possession, use, carrying and transportation of switchblade knives are not uniform and widely differ depending on individual state legislation.
In Germany these knives are classified as illegal weapons, with the exception of side-opening switchblade knives with a single-edged blade which does not exceed 8.5 cm in length. Nevertheless, the switchblade knives which meet all above-mentioned conditions (and are thus legal) still remain classified as weapons under the German law on weapons (Waffengesetzes, short WaffG). Under these terms, the required minimum age for the purchase, possession and use of such knives is fixed at 18 years old. Additionally, the legal carrying/transportation of such knives in public places is also subject to specific conditions (§ 42a of the WaffG).
