Seax, Viking Sax Knife with Wire-Wrapped Grip
Although most popularly associated with the Vikings, the seax, also called scramasax, was used across the whole spectrum of Germanic, Scandinavian and Saxon / Anglo-Saxon societies from the Migration Period through the early Middle Ages. Carried by both men and women, it was a multifunctional blade that served as a weapon of war, an everyday tool or an object of prestige. Surviving specimens furnish evidence that this particular type of knife or dagger could not only greatly vary in shape and design, but also in quality – ranging from plain, roughly made examples to sumptuous, elaborately adorned luxury pieces – and size.
In terms of size, the hand-crafted Viking Age sax knife we offer here lies at the threshold between a long dagger an a short sword. It features a single-edged, unsharpened EN45 spring steel blade with a thick spine, a pointed tip and a full tang that is threaded to the pommel. The guard and pommel are both cast from steel and the wooden core grip is tighly wrapped in wire. All parts have been blackened, which makes for a truly eye-catching hilt and lends the early medieval knife a classy, yet grim and rustic character.
The Viking seax dagger comes with a sturdy, high-quality sheath that is crafted from 4 mm thick, vegetable tanned leather and features a handsome braided seam.
Please note that this Viking saxe is not a battle ready weapon. It is designed as a collector's or decoration/display piece and is not suited for combat reenactment. Besides its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as a prop (e.g. to complete your costume) and will make your transformation into a proud Norse warrior just perfect!
