A very beautiful Viking brooch decorated in the Urnes style.
Brooches were part of everyday clothing for women and men. They were mostly used to hold items of clothing together and were later replaced by buttons. Brooches were also used as jewellery or to depict symbols.
The Urnes style
This is the last of the 6 known Viking Age styles that persisted until the beginning of the 12th century. Urnes replaced the Ringerike style in the middle of the 11th century. This style was named after a small Norwegian town on the Lustrafjord.
