The square shield boss (so-called umbo) we offer here is the perfect accessory for ambitious re-enactors who wish to build their own Roman shield. It is ideal as a replacement or spare part for a Roman legionary scutum, but is of course also perfectly suited for other DIY shield projects. The elegant simplicity of this sturdy, quality, yet good value boss makes it easy to combine with a wide range of Roman shields.
Our umbo is handcrafted from approx. 1.6 mm thick steel, blackened on the reverse side for better corrosion resistance, and features four pre-drilled holes. The corners are slightly rounded.
The boss is pre-bent and therefore intended for mounting on a curved shield. Before assembly, however, it still might have to be slightly adjusted to the curvature of the shield. Mounting hardware is included in the delivery.

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain shield bosses on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
