The Holy Lance – Museum replica

High-quality replica of the Holy Lance, nowadays housed in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria. It is an elaborate winged spearhead wrapped with silver wire and a brass sleeve. Inscribed on the brass sleeve is the Latin phrase: LANCEA ET CLAVUS DOMINI which means lance and nail of the lord.

The Holy Lance, also known as the Spear of Longinus, the Spear of Destiny, or the Holy Spear, is the oldest piece of imperial regalia belonging to the kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. It is said to contain a fragment of one of the nails used in the Crucifixion of Christ, known as the Holy Nail. According to legend, the lance originated with either Saint Maurice, leader of the Theban Legion, or the centurion Longinus. The latter is said to have used the lance to verify Jesus’ death, and it is therefore believed to be soaked in his holy blood.

For a time, the lance was considered the most important piece of Insignia of the Holy Roman Empire, until it was later replaced by the Imperial Crown. It was kept in the crossbar of the Imperial Cross and was regarded as a symbol of divine legitimacy. A ruler who possessed it was considered invincible and seen as God’s representative on Earth.

This detailed replica is supplied without a shaft and is suitable for a shaft with a diameter of approx. 2.5 cm.
