DIY-Set
The ancient Greek dory, the single-handed spear of the hoplites in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, was usually composed of a 2 to 3 m wooden shaft, a flat spearhead made of iron and a thick, sharp butt spike made of bronze called a sauroter. The butt cap was not only a counterweight to the spearhead and a protective device for the lower end of the shaft, but also an effective weapon in its own right which could serve as a backup if the spearhead or the shaft had broken off in the fray. Additionally, the end cap's sturdy pointed tip was also used to stand the spear in the ground. With the evolution of warfare tactics, the dory was eventually superseded by the twice as long, two-handed pike called the sarissa.
The Greek spear set we offer here consists of a leaf-shaped, blunt spearhead made of mild steel, paired with a cast brass butt spike with classic four-sided design and sharp tip. Both feature pre-drilled holes allowing you to fit them onto the wooden staff of your choice to create your own hoplitic spear. Haft and mounting hardware are not included in delivery.
