Ideal for DIY shield projects.
Shield bosses were both designed to deflect enemy blows and accommodate the grip of the shield. But beside their practical function, they could in some instances additionally serve an ornamental purpose.
The round shield boss (so-called umbo) we offer here is the perfect accessory for ambitious re-enactors who wish to build their own Roman shield. It is ideal for a parma, but can also be used on a scutum (please note that the boss is not bent, so if it is to be mounted on a curved shield, it should be adapted to the curvature of the shield before assembly).
The boss is made of brass, blackened on the reverse side and features four pre-drilled holes to affix it to your shield. Mounting hardware (screws with rounded brass heads) is included in delivery.
