RM Chain Maille Sleeves, pair, 6 mm ID, riveted/punched
- Very authentic and fully battle-ready -
During the high and especially late medieval period, chain mail armour was gradually replaced by plate armour. Maille fabrics were only used at those parts which couldn't be protected by the steel plates or which needed a better articulation. Chainmail parts like these reconstructed sleeves were sewn or knotted to the garments e.g. to a gambeson or an arming jacket, while the body usually was protected by a steel harness.
This replica from Ulfberth was made according to the medieval originals. The sleeves are not only covering the arm but also adjoining parts of the shoulder, back and chest. Delivery includes two sleeves, one for each arm. The sleeves are already closed.
The RM chain maille type is composed of small rings with an inner diameter of 6 mm only. As per original finds, it is woven with alternate rows of riveted round rings (domed rivet heads) and punched flat rings. Both then and now, the extremely small inner ring diameter has made it possible to manufacture this particular chain mail out of 1 mm steel without impairing its effectiveness, and thereby to achieve a weight reduction of about 30 - 35%. The common abbreviation for this particular weave is RM (Roman Mail), as it was favoured by the ancient Celts and Romans (Lorica Hamata). However, it remained in use throughout the ages and was commonly worn up to the late Middle Ages.
Available in sizes M, L und XL.
All measurements are taken fully stretched.
Details:
- Inner ring diameter: approx. 6 mm
- Ring width: approx. 1 mm
- Finish: natural (slightly oiled)
