The rapier was primarily a civilian dueling sword since the 16th century.
This socalled "Pappenheimer" sword is characterized by a basket-shaped guard that protects the hand. It takes its name from Gottfried Heinrich zu Pappenheim, a field marshal of the 30-years-war. This Swept Hilt Basket Rapier features a non-sharpened blade made of high carbon steel, a sharp point and a wire-wrapped grip. The scabbard is made of leather-wrapped wood and provides a throat and chape made of metal.
