This wearable, fully articulated reconstruction of a plate armour for the legs, as worn in the late Middle Ages, is handcrafted from 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel and blackened on the inside for better corrosion resistance. It is designed to protect the thighs, the knees and the lower legs.
The leg armour consists of cuisses, pointed poleyns (knee caps, also known as genouilleres), and hinged tubular greaves for the shins and calves. For proper freedom of movement, all parts are connected together by sliding plates or lames that are hinged on sturdy steel rivets. The upper edge of the cuisses as well as the lower edge of the greaves are rolled. In addition, the top of each cuisse is fitted with a piece of leather which is pre-punched to accommodate braided cords. On the outer sides, the poleyns extend into distinctive, approx. 17 cm high, 14 cm wide fan plates that curve towards the hollow of the knee. Three riveted, adjustable straps of approx. 2 mm thick leather and brass buckles allow for a custom fit.

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain plate armour on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
