"According to old tales, this hood was once worn by a mysterious traveller as he moved silently through the forest. It shielded him from the cold and from prying eyes, clinging to him like a silent companion – and still bears the marks of a life lived in the shadows. Thorns tore the fabric, and the hem was worn against rough stone. Coarse stitches and rushed repairs tell of nights when he narrowly escaped his enemies. A garment that not only protects – but holds traces of paths once walked and memories long past."
The medieval hood Stig combines historical design with high-quality workmanship and practicality. Thanks to its simple cut, it can be combined with a variety of different outfits, whether as part of a Viking costume, a medieval outfit, or as a fitting accessory for LARP or re-enactment.
The shape and the design of the cowl are based on an archaeological find from Norway, dated between the 10th and 12th century. Characteristic features include the pointed hem with an insert square piece on the chest – details that also define the original find from Skjoldehamn.
Made from sturdy cotton, the hood impresses with its unique used look, created through a special washing process. Raw edged, visible repair stitches at the chest, and hand-embroidered crosses on the hood and neckline emphasise its rugged, timeworn character – as if it has already seen many adventures.
The gugel is worn like a separate hood and covers the head, neck and shoulders, fitting comfortably without feeling restrictive. A small drawstring at the back allows for an individual fit and ensures it stays securely in place – whether you’re exploring the woods or strolling through the market.
Although the gugel doesn’t originate directly from the Viking Age, it has become a popular addition to Viking attire for both men and women. It also fits perfectly with early and high medieval garments. Whether you portray a mysterious ranger, a proud shieldmaiden, or a wandering merchant – this gugel adds that special something to your look and lets you travel to a world long forgotten.
