The so-called dusack (also dussack, dusäck, dusägge or dysack among various other spellings) emerged in the 15th century and was in use until well into the 17th century. The peculiar name of this single-edged, one-handed cut-and-thrust weapon of Bohemian origin, which soon became widespread in Germany, derives from the Czech word tesák (lit. "fang”, in a wider sense “hunting dagger”).
The dusack looked like a short sabre or cutlass. It usually consisted of a broad, gently curving blade that tapered to a point and was fashioned into an oval loop at the opposite end to form a grip with a protective knuckle-bow. The grip part was often covered with fabric or leather for better purchase. This simple one-piece construction, which made it easy and inexpensive to produce, largely contributed to its popularity, especially among the German middle and lower classes.
The dusack was mainly a practice weapon used in the early modern German school of fencing. As training dusacks were commonly made of wood, perishable by nature, not a single one has survived the ravages of time. However, numerous written and iconographic sources from the Renaissance (books, training manuals, prints and even friezes) bear testimony to their prevalence as fencing school and training weapons at the time. To date, only a few surviving plain, roughly crafted iron dusacks are known.

The dusack sabre we offer here is made of one piece of high carbon steel. The blunt edge is approx. 2.5 mm thick, and the tip is rounded. The handle has a rough forged finish. Just like many historical examples, it is shaped as a simple bow that protects the hand, and is wrapped in brown leather for a better grip. This late medieval sabre is supplied without a scabbard.

The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain the blade on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
