"According to old legends, this gambeson was once crafted to protect the body of a noble man in countless battles. It rested heavily on his shoulders, softened blows, withstood blades, and shielded him in decisive moments from deadly wounds. Hastily patched areas on the shoulder and leg still bear witness to times when combat left its marks – when the gambeson was the only thing standing between its wearer and death. This is a garment that offers more than mere protection – it carries the scars of a warrior and the memory of battles long past."
The gambeson Vari combines a rugged design with a distinctive worn-in look and excellent wearing comfort. Its high-quality workmanship and elaborate details make it a real eye-catcher. It is ideal for fantasy, Viking and medieval re-enactments, and makes a perfect addition to medieval garments and costumes.
It is modelled on late medieval protective clothing, as it was once worn under chainmail and plate armour. Such padded jackets, also known as aketons, not only increased the comfort of knight’s armour, but also cushioned blows from opponents and protected against life-threatening injuries.
Its unique used look is achieved through a special washing process. With its worn areas, distinctive repair stitches, and patch at the hem, it looks as if it has already seen many battles – and is ready to write new history.
The sleeveless gambeson is made of three layers: a durable outer layer of cotton canvas, a middle layer of polyester padding, and a soft inner lining also made of polyester. The medium-thick padding gives the gambeson its characteristic shape and structural stability, while the polyester lining ensures the gambeson can be worn comfortably over other clothing.
An approx. 5 cm high standing collar protects the neck area. The front overlaps in the chest area and fastens with two distinctive leather buckles. Side slits allow for greater freedom of movement. For an authentic, battle-ready look, we recommend pairing the gambeson with a belt, made easy thanks to the especially wide belt loops.
Two wide leather straps on the shoulder can be used to attach pieces of armour, highlighting the garment’s practical design. Vertical quilting, set-in sleeves, and a slightly tailored fit with a pointed front hem give the gambeson a striking silhouette.
Finely crafted details made from smooth leather and suede-edged seams complete the look, making Vari a high-quality outer garment for re-enactment, LARP, and medieval markets. Whether you’re portraying an experienced ranger, a fearless Viking, or a proud knight, this gambeson will add that special something to your look and transport you right back to a long-lost age.
