Brown Leather Belt in Celtic Style, approx. 170 cm
The Celts were a number of tribes that originated in Central Europe during the Iron Age. They later spread out across Europe as far east as the Balkan Peninsula and up towards Ireland. Occupying much of these areas up until around 275 BC, their territories were gradually usurped, conquered and occupied not only by the expanding Romans but also by the Germanic peoples, thus leaving them mainly on the British Isles and in Ireland.
Skilled artisans, the Celts developed numerous types of patterns used throughout their culture to decorate all kinds of everyday objects such as pottery, jewellery, textiles as well as weapons and even monuments. The Celtic style, which is mainly characterized by entwined animal-like creatures, spiral patterns and a variety of plaits and knots even spread into many illuminated Christian manuscripts whose illustrators were inspired by the ancient Celtic pagan art.
This finely crafted, sturdy belt is crafted from 3 mm thick brown cowhide and fitted with a beautiful antiqued brass buckle fastened to the belt with two brass rivets. The approx. 170 cm long, 4 cm wide strap is embossed with a plaitwork / knotwork design in Celtic style and features 18 holes with reinforcing brass eyelets. It can thus be adjusted to a wide range of sizes for a comfortable, custom fit (suitable for a waist circumference between approx. 70 and 120 cm). The belt buckle is adorned with knotwork twin serpents or dragons facing towards each other, a recurring motif in Celtic and Norse/Viking art.
Owing to its design, this leather belt is not only a classy addition to any Celtic garb, but also fitting for early Middle Ages and Viking Age settings. Suited for men and woman alike, it is an ideal garment accessory for medieval markets, re-enactment events or LARP gatherings and also makes any modern life outfit stand out from the crowd!
