Fixed Blade Knife Swedish Forest with stabilized curly birch handle, blue, Casström
These knives are raising the bar in the industry with a handle from stabilized birch which not only looks really smart but is also water-resistant, washable and impact-resistant. The wood is vacuum-injected with a mixture of hardened methacrylate esters, which increases its density and makes the whole handle resistant to moisture, cracks and hard impact. For this particular model, blue pigment was added to the mixture for a more interesting look.
This strong full-tang knife is built for versatile use during hunting, fishing and general use of the forest. It is a very sturdy knife which is equally suitable for skinning game, filleting a fish or carving wood. The blade is about 10 cm long and made of about 3.5 mm thick Sandvik 14C28N, a Swedish stainless steel specially developed for knives (58-59 HRC). The knife is sharpened with a full flat grind and has a satin finish. The steel, combined with the grinding, makes for a knife which is very easy to cut with, effective for a variety of tasks and which maintains its edge well while still being very easy to re-sharpen. This type of grind is not ideal for batoning and prying but rather designed for efficient cutting, owing to the low angle and thinness behind the edge.
The knife comes with a very sturdy sheath made of 3 mm thick vegetable-tanned leather. The sheath has an extra wide belt loop, a drain hole and a hole for leg attachment.
About the steel: 14C28N steel is Sandvik's most recently developed product in its popular series of knife steel. The optimized composition creates a steel with a unique combination of excellent edge holding features (stability, sharpenability and sharpness), high hardness and high corrosion resistance. This steel has the ability to be heat-treated, so that the wear resistance is improved over prior steel types, without affecting the microstructure. It is therefore relatively easy to sharpen the knife, while the edge stability in terms of chipping and edge rolling still remains very good.
