For anyone who prefers a shorter-bladed switchblade knife, Kershaw made the Launch 4. The Launch 4 sports a blade of just 1.9 inches (approx. 4.8 cm) and is pretty handy.

The blade is high-performance CPM154 steel. This powdered metallurgy blade steel has more uniform distribution of carbides - so it takes and holds an excellent edge. It also provides good corrosion resistance, wear resistance and toughness. The blade is DLC-coated for an additional measure of protection and non-reflective good looks.

To lighten the Launch 4's weight, the handle scales and integrated backspacer are durable aluminum, anodized in black. This model has a single-position pocket clip and carries tip-up.

The Launch 4 opens with a push button, which is recessed so that it is level with the flat of the handle. This is a safety feature and makes it harder for the knives to accidentally deploy. Nevertheless, such knives should always be handled with extreme caution in all circumstances. For left-handed use, use your index finger instead of your thumb to press the blade-release/lock button.

In Germany these knives are classified as illegal weapons, with the exception of side-opening switchblade knives with a single-edged blade which does not exceed 8.5 cm in length. Nevertheless, the switchblade knives which meet all above-mentioned conditions (and are thus legal) still remain classified as weapons under the German law on weapons (Waffengesetzes, short WaffG). Under these terms, the required minimum age for the purchase, possession and use of such knives is fixed at 18 years old. Additionally, the legal carrying/transportation of such knives in public places is also subject to specific conditions (§ 42a of the WaffG).
